8/17/21 — SewerAI, California-based creators of AutoCode™ and Pioneer™, have achieved NASSCO LACP certification for import and export of sewer lateral condition assessment data

Walnut Creek, CA — SewerAI Corporation has achieved certification from the National Association of Sewer Service Companies (NASSCO) for use of the Lateral Assessment Certification Program (LACP) in software import and export, enabling SewerAI to provide condition assessment deliverables from lateral (or “side sewer”) inspections in accordance with an industry standard common throughout North America. This latest certification is in addition to the Pipeline Assessment Certification Program (PACP) software certification SewerAI received in March 2021.

SewerAI provides wastewater condition assessment services using AutoCode™ which is a computer vision technology that automatically identifies conditions in CCTV and Digital Side Scan (DSS) inspection data. SewerAI’s industry-leading cloud platform for inspection data management, Pioneer™, is now certified to provide LACP deliverables to the wastewater industry. A growing number of sewer utilities, services contractors, and consulting engineers have chosen to innovate by leveraging AI and cloud computing to lower inspection costs, accelerate processes, and render higher quality data that drives strategic asset planning.

This latest NASSCO certification means the Pioneer™ platform now provides seamless conversions from archival LACP datasets coming from previously-certified legacy inspection software platforms, of which there are many.

Matt Rosenthal, Co-Founder and CEO of SewerAI shared that “SewerAI continues to innovate at a speed never before seen in the industry. We couldn’t be happier to expand our partnership with NASSCO, and we look forward to continuing to provide the most advanced technology ever created for the industry.”

There are an estimated 550,000 miles of sewer laterals in North America, consisting of one out of every three miles of wastewater conveyance pipeline, with each lateral typically being between 25 and 150 feet long, and usually spanning multiple layers of the groundwater table before discharging into larger mainline pipes. Structural defects in sewer laterals are major sources of groundwater infiltration and inflow (I/I), which, during wet weather, is one of the primary causes of sewer overflow events which contaminate our waterways and pose health risks to communities. It’s been estimated by the Water Environment Federation that sewer laterals are responsible for roughly half of all I/I in wastewater collection systems.

Sewer laterals are also the primary point of utility conflict from gas distribution lines installed improperly via horizontal directional drilling (HDD), a condition known as a “cross bore”, which poses long-term public safety risks. Numerous gas utilities throughout North America spend hundreds of millions annually in cross bore safety programs working with construction companies, inspection contractors, and sewer utilities, in which CCTV inspections play a fundamental role. SewerAI’s cross bore safety assurance services are currently being utilized by some of the largest natural gas utilities and sewer services contractors in the US.

Co-Founder and CRO Billy Gilmartin added that “achieving LACP certification puts SewerAI at the forefront of resolving major issues within sewer and natural gas critical infrastructure. If you represent a sewer utility being surveyed by a natural gas provider for cross bores, make sure you receive that data and upload it to Pioneer™. Within Pioneer you can deploy AutoCode™ and comply with your consent decree obligations. Give SewerAI a call today to save your utility, and your ratepayers, millions of dollars.”

Using AutoCode to Detect Cross Bores in Sewer Laterals

SewerAI’s dual offering of its AutoCode™ AI computer vision tools and its Pioneer™ cloud-based platform enables wastewater utilities to extend the Remaining Useful Life (RUL) of their assets by reducing inspection costs and contributing to an elevation in the quality, accuracy, and consistency of condition assessment data.

Formed in 2019, SewerAI is a growth-stage seed-funded startup.
